BOBBY HUTCHERSON / HAROLD LAND - RESURFACED

As I was looking into this feature on Hutchersons' sidemen, I discovered that several of Hutchersons'  recorded tracks (specifically Blue Note) were rejected from their originial LP release, or the LP not released at all. Some though not all, have since resurfaced on various compilations or CD versions of the original LP listed as bonus tracks. Why certain tracks are rejected is a curious matter of debate, but for now I'm glad to appreciate what we have of this music today.

JOE HENDERSON & WOODY SHAW - JAZZ PATTERNS 1970

I'd like to further endorse the talent of  George Cables, on this occasion switching to electric piano, on which he seemed quite comfortable with on many artists' recordings during the 1970's. 'Jazz Patterns' or more suitably 'Joe Henderson live at the Lighthouse part 2', is made up of three tracks not issued on the original milestone label LP of this live date at the Lighthouse Cafe, Hermosa beach, California 1970. The line up is cracking and the music especially 'What's mine is yours' ( Power to the People) just thrilling.

GEORGE CABLES - WHY NOT 1975

A deserved recording in his own right, admired by producer Masahiko Yuh, he brought pianist George Cables into the studio in 1975 and recorded this LP for the label he would later name after one of Georges' compositions. The music is totally absorbing, a classic acoustic trio led by a gifted musician.

THE BOBBY HUTCHERSON QUARTET featuring HADLEY CALIMAN LIVE IN EUROPE 1977

During 1977 Bobby hutcherson brought his recording group of this period (unfortunatley minus pianist George Cables) to Europe for several live performances. Featuring the late, great Hadley Caliman on tenor saxophone, it's a fitting oppotunity to highlight Little Dex's tremendous talent in this fine setting. These selected shows are just beautiful in music and spirit.

THE GERALD WILSON ORCHESTRA - EVERYWHERE 1968

During the late 1960's, Bobby Hutcherson recorded three studio LP's as a member of the very fine Gerald Wilson Orchestra, which during this period also included tenor saxophonists Harold Land and Hadley Caliman (more from Caliman in a future post). So this setting ties in neatly in featuring Hutchersons' choice of saxists before and after the excellent Manny Boyd.

JAMES LEARY - LEGACY 1980

Next up is the very fine James Leary on bass with his debut recording on Blue Collar Records, with a full brass ensemble and the superb Joe Henderson on tenor taking the lead chair. A very impressive, uplifting recording.
